Our Story
Crafting timeless elegance since 1930

The Heritage
Salim Silver is a guardian of heritage in Kotagede, Yogyakarta, the historic capital of the Mataram Sultanate. Our workshop is a living museum where the ancient art of Javanese silver crafting is preserved and renewed.
Our journey began in 1930 with Karto Oetomo, followed by his son Salim Widardjo in 1952. Representing the third generation, Priyo Salim joined the family legacy in 1985.
In 1987, inspired by the book Power and Gold, Priyo pivots the workshop's focus to handcrafted silver jewelry. He has since dedicated his life to preserving and revitalizing the intricate Javanese techniques of Repoussé (embossing) and Filigree.
Today, the 4th generation has stepped in to polish and elevate this heritage. We continue to create pieces that are not just jewelry, but wearable art that honors our past while embracing the future of design.
Our Journey
From a humble family workshop to a guardian of Kotagede silver heritage.
The Beginning
Karto Oetomo, the grandfather of Priyo Salim, lays the foundation by starting 'KD', a silver business focused on fine household silverware. This early history is documented in Pienke W.H. Kal's 'Yogya Silver: Renewal of a Javanese Handicraft' (2005).
A New Legacy
Building on his father's work, Salim Widardjo establishes 'Salim' Silver. He expands the craft by introducing intricate silver miniatures—including becak, andong, and traditional statues—setting a new benchmark for detail.
The Third Generation
The legacy continues as Priyo Salim joins the family business. While studying Cartography at Universitas Gadjah Mada, he brings a fresh perspective to the traditional workshop.
The Pivot
A defining moment arrives. Inspired by the book 'Power and Gold', Priyo Salim steers the workshop toward a new direction: handcrafted Javanese silver jewelry, blending tradition with wearable art.
Global Reach
The commitment to quality pays off as Salim Silver enters the global market, exporting its handcrafted jewelry to clients across the United States and Europe.
Modernization
The 4th generation steps forward to carry the torch. They begin modernizing the business operations, ensuring that the ancient techniques thrive in the digital era.
A Living Museum
Today, Salim Silver stands as a guardian of heritage. Our workshop remains a living museum, open to all who wish to witness the creation of 'art for the future' that honors the past.
